The site is new and at the moment they are running a kick off challenge using digistamps. Many of the sites members are giving away digistamps for you to use in the challenge (see here). There are 42 freebies at present. Now if you haven't used digistamps before I heartily recommend them. They are versatile, look brilliant and save so much storage. They are usually a fraction of the cost of normal stamps and you can usually get them straight away as you download them. The website has some great resources including tutorials on how to use and what you can do with digistamps which includes using embossing powders with them.
Here are two cards I made using stamps given away in this freebie challenge.

This card uses a stamp by Bugaboo Digital Stamps.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 387px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_vRtZgS3hf-s/TCXtmGQ6TII/AAAAAAAAAHY/7hgF0s8JYG8/s400/CoolcatCard.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5487052959793171586" />

This beautiful vintage stamp is from Sugar Creek Hollow.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 291px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_vRtZgS3hf-s/TCXrIMQ2wRI/AAAAAAAAAHQ/Ag0SsjLive8/s400/queenbee.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5487050246984220946" />

: ) Estazia

Woah! Computer failures.

Well I think I am finally able to get back on to blogger after multiple computer failures. That is first my laptop hard drive crashed with the loss of all data, luckily I had backed up most of it. I managed to restore what I wanted onto a new hard drive and I counted myself lucky and looked on the bright side: my laptop was now clutter free and organised. Yay!
Not two days later and my desktop computer crashes when a sound card throws a wobbly. Now I have managed to retrieve most of what I need from that and thank goodness that includes all the photographs I had on it. Lessons to be learned from all this is that I now have three (count them) yes, three external drives that are busily backing up my data.
Paranoid? My family's history is on my computers in the form of photos, scrapbook layouts and recipes. Not to mention all the day to day business stuff like statements, receipts and emails.
In short I was devastated when I thought everything was gone. After all what were the chances of two computers going down at the same time? Well pretty good actually especially if you get a virus (not the case in this instance).
So make sure you have good up to date virus protection and take the time to backup, backup, BACKUP!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://craftingcachet.blogspot.com/2010/06/woah-computer-failures.html' title='Woah! I can hardly believe it. He was only 6 1/2 months old when I started looking after him! His dad's birthday is two days after his and so I needed two male themed cards for a big guy and a little guy.

I saw a card Kristina Werner made that used the small paper images on the cover sheet of a scrapbook paper pack. I had also kept all my Basic Grey pack sheets just in case I could use them and so now was the perfect time. I broke out their Archaic set and cut some of the small square contact images from the display sheet. I arranged them on the card and then used the alphabet stickers from the same set to spell out happy birthday. I loved this card and it was so easy as the papers all co-ordinated.

The card I made for Sam had been planned around the use of the Changito's in Space set. Joanne of Mainly Flowers blog made a fantastic 18th card with them and I fell in love with the stamps. As I call Sam a cheeky monkey at every available moment it seemed appropriate. So I created a round card (drew round a plate onto a folded card) and used chalks on a pearlescent blue paper to create a planet like surface . Then I used prismacolor pencils and oms to colour the stamped images which I arranged on the planet. I used a rocket to help balance the card.

Lolly pad freebie image

forgot to show you what the lolly pads look like so here it is.see post below for details.

Holiday projects and a Lolly Pad freebie

Hi all hope you are having a good summer so far (despite the weather in the UK). The kids are off school and so I am busy trying to keep them amused when it's raining. We made viking boats from milk bottles (6 pint plastic ones) and I am kicking myself that I didn't take photos as they were really cool!
We also made Jar Terrariums. I did take some photos of these.
First the supplies: polymer clay in red, beige, and white (fimo, sculpey are good); a decent size jar ( jam or preserving in our case); small pebbles/stones; compost; moss (scraped from my patio) and small plants (we used house leeks).

We made some toadstools from the polymer clay: just create a small squat sausage of beige clay and top it with a rounded cone of red clay. Roll small balls of white and press on to the red cap. Bake in the oven using the instructions for the type of clay you used. Let them cool thoroughly before placing them in the gardens.

The Terrarium

First make sure your jar is clean and dry. Layer the stones so that they just cover the bottom of the jar. Now layer the soil to about a third of the jars depth. Place the house leeks ( or other small plants ) on the soil and fill in the areas of bare soil with the moss. You can tear the pieces to fit. Lastly place your cooked toadstools in your garden.

If I had two girls I would probably have printed out some fairies on acetate and hung them from the lid by some wire. The boys flipped when I made this suggestion and immediately ran for their star wars lego soldiers, I managed to take the photos before the gardens were invaded by clone troopers.

I think they are lovely and I can't wait to try one on a much larger scale for myself.

A freebie

I designed some little lolly notepads. I also want to say thank you to everyone who has commented on this project.

I have had quite a few enquiries about the template and where people can get it. Well I am trying to write up some instructions for putting it together and a video demonstration of how it works and I will then be making it available for sale. I only had blue or clear gems and they didn't work with the colour scheme of my project, so I wondered if I could alter the clear gems to fit. I coloured them with a copic marker and left them to dry for a few minutes. It worked I got lovely cognac coloured gems and now I know that I'll only be buying clear gems in the future and colouring them to fit my project.

I also had to make a very rushed card this week as I only realised that it was my neighbours daughter's first birthday as I saw them setting out the balloons for her party. I rummaged through my stash and found this paper pieced bluebird that I had made up. I got the pattern from My Scrap Chick and cut it out using a cricut and SCAL (Sure Cuts a Lot) a couple of months ago. I was just testing out the pattern and software and made up the chick and then stuck it a scraps box. Well it made the pefect centrepiece to a card for Kaitlin who is very chirpy and almost always happy. A few punched flowers and a scalloped edge meant this card took about 10 minutes to make.

I think I will make up a few more little characters and toppers as you never know when you need something in hurry.

Thanks for looking.
: ) Estazia

House Box becomes a colour challenge project

Good morning.

This post connects two people whose blog's I visit regularly and whose work I admire (and aspire to create similar results.)

I designed a house shaped box after seeing a chipboard house on Lauren Meader's blog that she altered. Lauren's Timeless Templates are great and I suddenly wondered if I could make a template to make a paper house.

Well I designed it on my computer and then made it up using white cardstock to test my design. Great it worked! And then it sat on my desk for about three and a half weeks, undecorated!

On to the second blog connection, Kristina Werner. I visit regularly and look at her Color Inspiration challenges and love the combinations, but I don't join in. Usually because I just don't have the time. This week however, I made time. I took my poor undecorated house and gave it a makeover. I also made a card that will go into the box (with some buddies of course) to create a nice gift for my Aunt who has just moved into a new house.

Anyway here are some pics. Two hours later and I had five beautiful origami flowers, but no idea what to do with them.

I think I will probably string them together and make a garland out of them, but I don't think I have quite enough, not a problem as I don't think I have exhausted the desire to make them yet.

Should you want to try your hand at them you can find the excellent tutorial at Folding Trees.

TFL : ) Estazia

Happy birthday to yoo-hoo!

I finally made an acetate card. I have used acetate in card making before, especially as a window and such, but never as a card base. This is particularly sturdy acetate but can still be cut with scissors. The card is 4 x 4 inches.

The owl stamp is a Sugar Nellie design for Craft Stamper magazine and the flower border is from the Four Japanese Dolls set by Hero Arts.

I stamped the owl onto brown cardstock using a clear versamark ink and then brushed a gold mica powder over it. Next I stamped just the head of the owl onto white cardstock and again brushed on the gold mica powder. I then cut out the eyes and beak and layered them on the brown owl. I used an orange soufflé pen to colour the beak. Next I used white opaque Stazon to stamp the flower border down the right side of the card front. I then used Sakura glaze pens to colour the flowers in.

Inside the card I fixed a brown scalloped circle of cardstock and then using the computer generated a circle of text saying ‘Happy birthday to yoo-hoo’ on white cardstock. I used a circle punch to cut it out and glued this to the scalloped layer. Now I could line up the owl and fix it to the front of the card using a spray adhesive. A ribbon (free from a magazine) tied down the left hand side finished it up.

I also fixed a circle of white cardstock to the back of the card behind the scalloped circle so I could write my message.

Thanks for looking.
: ) Estazia

A Flight of Butterflies...

I love the elegance of butterflies. I love to see them dance across the sky and that was the inspiration for a card I designed and made using my craft robo. Now I have had the craft robo for about 2 years now, but I haven't really seriously used it ot make anything. I have played about cutting the odd shape, but not produced a complete project using it.

I don't have a dedicated crafting space: the kitchen table is where I craft and that means that I constantly have to clear stuff away for meals and such. So I don't get my laptop and craft robo and paraphenalia out very often, but I was determined to do so for this idea I had.

I used paintshop pro to create my design and then created the cut file in the robomaster software that came with the cutter. Then I started the cutter and waited for the image to finish being cut.

I used Almost Amethyst cardstock for the base card which measure 41/4 x 41/4 ins and then I cut the same butterflies out with Barely Banana cardstock. A little light chalking around the edges with some pearlescent chalks and I layered the butterflies over the background card, leaving the wings slightly raised on some.

I then used my stamp a ma jig to position the sentiment on the background in the space between the butterflies.

I love the elegant simplicity of this card.

: ) Estazia

A gift from a challenge

My Stampers Ten group was sent a package of A6 size cardstock and designer paper pieces and challenged to make something with it.

I took a small square of the Tea Party DP and stuck it in a small frame from a K&Co bracelet kit. I added a small glittered Gelly Butterfly sticker and covered the lot in diamond glaze to seal it. When it was dry I fitted it to the bracelet chain from the kit with a jump ring.
Fortuitously my niece's name is Katie and K&Co have stamped a K on the findings (presumably for K&Co!) so I decided to make this for her upcoming birthday.

Next I broke apart the small box of matches I found in my kitchen drawer and made a template of the box which I transferred to the card stock. I made up the box and wrapped some of the DP around it and lined the inside with some more. A band of white paper that was punched with a fiskars punch wrapped over that and I stuck three small flowers 2 yellow 1 pink on the top. Finally some gems in the flower middles finished of the box.

Believe it or not I still had some paper and card left over and so I used strips to create a postcard with the final complete piece of A6 cardstock I had left. There was just enough cardstock to create a pocket for a gift card on the back of the postcard. Some more punched white paper and flowers tied it to the matchbox.
A little tip: I got the small flowers from a bunch a artificial flowers that my mum had bought and no longer wanted. I just pulled the fabric blooms off the plastic stalks and they yielded about 200-300 blooms of each colour. Flowers like this can be found in discount stores and might be worth a look.
: ) Estazia

Pretty Playful Petal card

Card making time has been a sparse around here this month, but I did get to go to the Big Stamp and Scrapbooking show at Alexandra Palace a couple of weekends ago. I bought a bucket load of dies for my bigshot (yay! Labels dies no more wonky cutouts!), some great stamps, inkpads and a couple of Basic Grey collections that were half price!

I also saw a few demonstrations of copics (something I had been looking at with envy on many different blogs). These were the Ciao's and they had loads at the show, but were only selling them individually. I couldn't think what colours to get let alone stand there and pick out each one, so I waited until I got home and looked for the best price for the sets that are sold. I managed to get some from graphics direct. I got 72 for about £115 which would have cost me about £143 at the show. I've only messed about trying them out so far but I love them and I hope to have some stuff I've made with them up soon.

Anyway I did get a card made using the kit that Joanne provided for the Stampers Ten meeting in April. It uses the Playful Petals stamps and Tea Party Designer Paper.

Here's the card I came up with.
You can see the card that was made at the meeting here.

: ) Estazia

Bunnies galore on my Easter Cards...

Finally found some time to share what is turning into a monthly blog update... guess this is why I could never keep a journal.

I made some Easter cards with a lovely set from Pink Petticoat called Spring Wishes. Such lovely bright and fresh colours and designs and the bunnies are too cute. I made three cards by printing the patterns directly onto the card base and then using prismacolor pencils and mineral spirits to blend them I coloured the bunnies.

On this final card I had a slight accident and spilt some yellow watercolour onto my white surround after I had finished colouring mind you, so rather than waste the image I just cut the bunny out and mounted it on the card as is. I have been working a lot and in the free time I had I have rearranging my bedroom. I made my own bed (literally) about 12 years ago and I decided it was about time I got a new one. The problem being the new bed doesn't have the same amount of space underneath it as the old one and so everything I have stored under there now needs a new home (or a good culling).

Anyway I am almost straight and can actually see the floor around the bed again, so I took some time to make a St Patrick' Day background paper set.

Three papers, two with different text on and one without any text. A valentines card.

I'd like to share a valentines card that I made. I realised that the only heart punch I had wasn't really the shape of heart I was looking for so I had to improvise and use a large six petal flower punch (Woodware super 2" Flower). I drew lines on the back to divide all the petals like slices of a pie; I then cut out two "slices" width to create a heart (see the shaded area in the diagram).

I then mounted the hearts on white punched circles, popping the centre one up with dimensional pads. Two rows of pricked holes along the bottom of the card were cross-stitched with red button thread to create 'kisses' and I wrote 'love and' in the space left in the rows. The paper for the hearts came from the Little Sizzles 'Country' paper pad by Sissix. I think this has a more masculine feel to it so it's great for male friend or relative. The sentiment could also be changed, maybe hugs and kisses?
Thanks for looking.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://craftingcachet.blogspot.com/2009/01/hearts-and-kisses-valentines-card.html' title='Hearts and Kisses. Two and half weeks into the new year already and I haven't blogged since before Christmas!

I hope that you enjoyed your holidays in whatever form they come and that this new year will prove to be a fabulous one.

I have been crafting like crazy finishing off a few gifts for people that I knew I wouldn't be seeing until after christmas and I've been making cards for birthdays that fall within the first two months of the year.

So with that in mind here is a card that I made for my aunt who is 81 on the 29th. It's been a tough year for her as she lost her husband of 59 years and discovered that she has breast cancer in both breasts. She has been amazing in her attitude to all that life has sent her this year!

I used a blue grey pre-scored card base and stamped four blossoms out of the 'From the Garden' set by Fancy Pants and used a blossom branch from the same set to make a border strip. The inks are pumkin pie, always artichoke and chocolate chip by Stampin up.

And this card is for my nephew who will turn 11 on february 8th. I can't believe how big he has grown.

I used black glitter card for the base and stamped a dotted star border using real red ink (Stampin Up) onto cream cardstock. The sentiment was stamped onto the same cream cardstock using a Just-rite monogram stamper and cut out using a circle punch.
The little space bugs are from a stamp sheet by Crafters Companion and coloured with Polychromos pencils.

Thanks for looking.

Card Decorations.......

This is a really quick post to show you two Swedish style cards that I made using some wooden reindeer tree decorations I found in a supermarket. It smells heavenly and is so gorgeous to work with. Here's the recipe I used:

1 cup ground cinnamon

1/4 cup applesauce (smooth, I blitzed a bramley apple sauce)

1/2 cup PVA glue

Use a glass or ceramic bowl (it's easier to clean) and mix together the cinnamon and applesauce. Do it slowly so that you don't create clouds of cinnamon powder. Then add the glue and continue to mix until it is blended in and the surface looks smooth. Now cover bowl with clingfilm and leave for an hour. When you want to use the dough, roll out small portions at a time keeping the rest covered with the clingfilm to prevent drying out.

I used cookie cutters to cut out stars and gingerbread people and I had some letter cutters so I cut out the letters for the word JOY. Lay your pieces on some baking parchment and let air dry for at least 24 hours, but turn the pieces over roughly every 5-6 hours to prevent them curling.

You can then glitter the surface or paint it.

In this gingerbread people card I used a white souffle pen by Sakura to draw on the icing. The stamp set was from Hero Arts.

In this card I glittered the front of the letters with a fine blue glitter. The snowflake stamps are Cute Companions Let it Snow set and the swirl is from the U-mount range by Creative Expressions.

Balloons and cabbage balls...

Well the christmas spirit is being dished out in bucket loads this week. Tuesday saw the boys having their school christmas dinner.
Now when I pick them up from school I always ask how their day went and what did they have for dinner. Yesterday both boys were carrying balloons home which they got with their christmas lunch and Jack, who is 8, had managed to blow his up to probably twice the size it should have been. Sam, who is six, was having a little problem: no matter how hard he blew only his cheeks inflated, not the balloon. He finally thrust the limp rubbery thing at me and asked "can you do it!". Well let me tell you a balloon that has been nearly blown up by a six year old is extremely soggy!!!!! After some judicious cleaning with my coat sleeve (must pack some more tissues), I blew it up and he happily made rude noises with it all the way home.
"So what did you have for dinner then?" I asked. Sam thought for a moment, then said,
" Roast potatoes, sausage, white stuff and cabbage balls."
A quick question to Jack resolved that the white stuff was turkey, but I think I shall from now on refer to sprouts as cabbage balls!

A Special card

Last monday was 1 year to the day that my grandmother died. It could have been a very sad day, but my mum and I visited with my aunt and we spoke via phone to most of the other members of our family.

My gran was wonderful. She was a small (4ft 8ins) welsh woman who had eight kids (4 of each). She was the centre of our family and we all congregated around her and her home.

Last Christmas was tough and this one will probably have it's moments.

I found a card that I had made for her for last year, but never got to give her. It's big and bold with embossed words down the side because her sight wasn't that good. I treasure this card and keep it in a box and I'll not part with it now because although I didn't give it to her, somehow it's still hers.

We won't forget you gran!

A poinsettia card

I received my Stampin Up stash this week and inside was a kit Joanne had put together as a make and take. I only used some additional gold card to make a scalloped border on the bottom (I got the punch in the stash and couldn't wait to use it).

Anyway here it is.

I also roughed up the edges of the petals a bit with a nail file.

DIY Disaster...

Wow! A week of work and I've busier than ever. I thought it was a good chance to do some diy and get the house winterproofed. So I filled gaps around windows and fitted heat reflectors behind all the radiators that were on the outside walls. It was really messy work I used (for the first and last time) the expanding foam that comes in a can. Ugggh! It gets away from you and turns into an ever expanding mess!! I should add that I only used this on a particularly large gap in some woodwork that was letting a draught in. Well I filled the holes and it kept on coming out up over the top and onto the woodwork, so I tried to scrape it off with a spatula thing and it covered the spatula and the handle and my hands and then it got in my hair!!!
Well now the thing to use according to the back of the can is acetone, yep nail polish remover! Now I don't wear nail polish even on special occasions, but I thought I had some remover somewhere and after a frantic search I found it! So I then had to soak about 3 inches of my hair at the front in nail polish remover and then wash it out.
Now nail polish remover stinks I can tell you and when your hair is soaking in it you get a noseful every time you breathe. So after washing, rewashing and conditioning my hair I go back to take a look at how the foam has got on. Yikes! Despite all the scraping it still overflowed, but now it's set. I had to use a stanley knife to cut it off. Horrible stuff I can tell you. I threw over half a can of the stuff out and I'll never use it again.
On the up side my room is very cozy and there are no more draughts.

Christmas is coming.. so I'm making cards.

I always say that I'll start making christmas cards really early (like August or something), but yet again I am only just starting. I am however feeling very festive and as I have a week off work (woo hoo!) I hope to at least get a little crafting time to make a few more.

I have so many projects that I want to try... cinnamon dough ornies... snowball baby ornies... some memory bracelets for my aunts; and my mum and I are making birthday books (with accompanying cards) for four of my relatives, so I know I'll have plenty to do to fill the time.

Anyway I was buying a gift with the two boys that I look after for their mum's birthday, when I saw some lovely ribbons and at a lovely price. I snatched them up and had to make something with them. So here is a card with a ribbon tree that allowed me to use two of the ribbons from the set and some of my stash of buttons.

Venturing into the World of Blogging

Welcome!
